Modern Calligraphy is based on classical script styles, but giving them a more up to date twist - a bit more varied and playful. While it's quite possible to do some modern calligraphy styles with an ordinary pen, most styles are better done with a brush pen or dip pen, as they're based on strong variations in line widths.

While all sorts of pens can be used, and you'll develop your own preferences with time and experience, you'll need some basics to get started. You'll need either a brush pen, or a nib holder and nibs. Unless you're using a brush pen with its own ink supply, you'll need some ink. And you'll need somthing to write in or on. The sections below have some of our favourites for each of these.
