25 Years of Pencil Perfection

Believe it or not, it's been a whole 25 years since Faber-Castell introduced the Perfect Pencil.

Perfect Pencil

Admittedly, a pencil is pretty much perfect all by itself. It will write upside down, in the rain and on all sorts of materials, from paper to paintwork. It will still work even if you tread on it or the tip breaks. It doesn't need refilling and you can easily erase any marks made with it. It's environmentally-friendly, and usually not overly expensive.

So how does the Perfect Pencil improve on perfection? Well, pencils don't generally sharpen themselves and while the marks are erasable, you do need something to erase them with. They also become shorter with use, eventually becoming too short to hold. Faber-Castell solved this little conundrum by creating a pencil with a cap that not only incorporates a pencil sharpener but also acts as an extender. On the end of the pencil is a replaceable eraser. And there you have it: a pencil that carries with it everything you need to use it to the best of its ability.

Something that makes it even more perfect is the fact that there is one for every budget. The Junior versions start at just £3 and there is a 9000 pencil version for just over £10. If you want to splash out a bit more, the brushed aluminium Design pencil comes with spare pencils but is still under £30. And for those of you with a bit more moolah, those created by Graf von Faber-Castell at over £140 are truly beautiful little pieces of luxury.

Perfect Pencil

To commemorate the quarter century of pencil perfection, they brought out the champagne - the Graf von Faber-Castell Champagne Gold Limited Edition - and they made only 750 of them. The rich brown cedar wood barrel of the pencil is beautifully 'crowned' by a cap of 22 carat gold. It nestles in a precision-made hinged wooden box, with a fabric drawstring bag and certification as to its limitation.

The Perfect Pencil takes a useful, humble object and makes it even more useful and a little less humble. It's beautiful but functional, simple but luxurious. Perfect, in fact.
