Celebrating 10 Years of Cult pens

In May 2015, Cult Pens celebrates 10 years of our unique vision of selling pens on the interweb. We'll be taking the afternoon off on Friday May 22nd to go out and celebrate as a team - so no orders shipped, phones answered or emails replied to after 12 noon! So Happy Birthday to us and a huge Thank You to our customers, staff and suppliers - past, present and future - for making us the most successful specialist pen website in the UK!

A Brief History of Cult Pens...

2001: Simon and Amanda are fed-up minions in the bowels of the City of London. On a sunny Spanish beach they resolve to Do Something About It.

2002: For reasons becoming increasingly unclear with the passage of time, they end up owning a small stationery shop in Dartmouth, Devon.

Very Orginal. Much idea.2003: They slowly realise that people seem to be really keen on pens, but that nobody is selling them properly online.

2004: Midnight oil is burned; PCs are roundly abused; there is much swearing.

2005: Cult Pens eventually launches in May with about 200 products.

2006: Apparently people are really keen on pens. Cult Pens takes on all 900-odd Pilot UK products, much to Pilot's bemusement. With the shop now sold, the hunt is on for proper premises.

2007: Cult Pens moves into its new home in Tiverton and acquires a couple of staff - yay!

2008: The recession arrives - oops. However, we now have 25 brands online and are growing strongly. What recession?

2009: We ship our 100,000th order! We spend 9 months developing a mission statement, which turns out to be: Sell Pens, Be Nice.

2010: A blur, frankly.

2011: We've now shipped over 200,000 orders. Could do with a sit-down really, but we're on target to 10,000 products in stock.

2012: Bursting at the seams with stock and staff, we expand into the premises above us.

2013: We launch our very own fountain pen and fountain pen ink range. We ask our customers to help out and they respond by helping us send 21,000 pens to kids in Africa.

2014: We win Internet Retailing's Customer Award, up against John Lewis, Ocado and ASOS. As if we didn't have enough to do, we replace our website (after 9 years!) and our entire back-office system and computer fleet.

2015: 10 Years old! 12,500 products in stock from 80 brands. 16 employees. 21,000 Trustpilot reviews of which 97% are 5-star. One Springer Spaniel, who quite honestly has been slacking all this time apart from the odd video appearance. We take an afternoon off to celebrate.

In the future:

2050: Cult Pens now operates from near-earth orbit, staffed by zero-gravity spaniels which are super-evolved into order pickers and web developers. Still obsessed with Kong balls though.
