The Society of Graphic Fine Art, founded in 1919, is the only national society in the UK entirely dedicated to drawing. Cult Pens is proud to have sponsored an award at DRAW 14, the society's 93rd annual open exhibition. Prizes were presented by broadcaster and journalist Andrew Marr, who also signed copies of his book, "A Short Book about Drawing".
The winner of the Cult Pens award for Highly Commended Drawing was Claire Sparkes, for her drawing "Sun - Boots - City on my Table". Claire is a contemporary artist, living and working on the South East coast of England, and has displayed at a large number of exhibitions, both group and solo.
"I was delighted to receive the 'Cult Pens Award' for my drawing 'Sun - Boots - City on my Table'. This image is the first of a new series of drawings I am embarking upon, and the first time this piece has been exhibited. The prize for 'Highly Commended Drawing' it received was a tremendous confirmation and encouragement to continue with the series."
On the subject of drawing, she says:
"Drawing is fundamental to my artistic practice. It is an instinctive process, of perceiving and communicating. The paper upon which I work, usually with graphite, forms a sensitive mediating surface. The image created is the trace where relationships between natural forms, and states of being are momentarily realised. A place of energetic contact."
"The inspiration for 'Sun - Boots - City on my Table' was contemplating notions of Britain today. This directed my attention to my vibrant yellow Dr. Marten boots with the iconic images of London drawn upon them. In contrast to the striking robustness of the boots, I added the delicacy of the tea cup and saucer. The image is a celebration of two great traditions."
Claire has been an Associate member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art since 2013, and won the 'Best Work' prize at their annual exhibition in the same year for her drawing 'Cello Practice'. Several of Claire's drawings, including "Cello Practice" and "Sun - Boots - City on my Table" can be seen on her website.
