SC. Lucht & Probst Fotografica Pen with Case Zoom SC. Lucht & Probst Fotografica Pen with Case

Stephan C. Lucht says he has ink in his blood. He has been a keen collector of writing instruments for many years, and has been involved in Germany’s largest writing instrument association for a long time. Making beautiful limited edition pens has become his passion.

He has spent several years working on a pen as a tribute to his grandfather, who never left the house without his beloved Leica M3 camera. The result is a limited edition pen that really feels like the product of love - the years of refinement have created something really special.

There are so many details in this pen:

  • The metal parts are made from magnesium alloy with a matt finish, as used for many high quality cameras.
  • The main body uses a soft-touch vulcanite coating, as used for classic Leica cameras, but making the finish the same wouldn’t quite work. The pen has a much smaller area, so the grain is made smaller, to look and feel right on the smaller surface.
  • The clip. Not only is the whole clip shaped to be reminiscent of the film-advance lever on the Leica camera, but there is a tiny camera icon on the front.
  • The knurling on the top ‘button’ is designed to look like the knurling used on camera controls, like the shutter speed and film rewind knobs on the Leica M3.

There is another hidden detail, which could be the most important of all. Pull the top button off the pen, and peer through the tiny hole in the top, and you will see scenes from the 1950s. Hidden behind the hole is a tiny Stanhope ‘optical bijou’ lens, with photographic print.

From the 1850s to the 1950s or so, these were a well-known novelty. A glass tube with a curved surface at one end, and a tiny photographic print, just a couple of millimetres across, that could be viewed by holding it up to the eye. In their day, they were fitted inside all sorts of things, often as tiny souvenirs. The pen has been designed to hold one of these tiny lenses and photos; a real piece of 1950s optics hidden inside a pen that pays homage to the cameras of the era.

This is a limited edition of just 500 pens, with varying scenes inside the top buttons. Every pen is individually handmade in Germany.

Supplied with supple leather pen case to match the Fotografica Pen. Flexible brown leather pouch embossed with Fotografica Pen branding and stylised camera logo. In a neat touch, there is a hole where the lens would be on that camera which allows you to see the knurling detail on the Fotografica pen whilst it's in the case. Hazel-coloured leather is inspired by the standby cases used for historic cameras, and comes from cattle in southwest Germany.

Fotographica pen uses standard G2 'Parker-style' refills.
