Beginning as an art shop near the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, it's said that when artists including Cezanne and Gauguin couldn't find the shades of paint they wanted, Gustave Sennelier decided to make his own paints to meet their needs.

In 1949, Pablo Picasso wanted colours he could use on any surface, without needing preparation, and Gustave's son, Henri Sennelier, created the first oil pastels for his use. Vincent van Gogh also used Sennelier oil paint.
