Smooth-edged, accurate and dimensionally-stable - that's all you need. Which is why most cheap plastic rulers simply don't cut it. Wooden rulers look nice; steel rulers are virtually indestructible; but a chunky acrylic rule from Blundell Harling is as good as it gets, and transparency is often helpful.
