The telescopic pen is an approach to designing a pen that's small to carry but is larger in the hand when in writing mode. Telescopic pens expand in size by lengthening the barrel - usually at the same time as extending the writing tip. This can be achieved with a click action, such as with the Lamy pico, or by simply sliding apart the two ends of the pen. The Zebra Expandz series is the most popular of this type - a nicely-engineered metal pen now available in two sizes and many barrel colours. The small size of these pens and the fact that the tip is automatically retracted when the pen is telescoped down makes them ideal for pockets, purses, handbags, etc - anywhere where space is at premium. Telescopic pens are usually solidly made in recognition that they'll experience more travelling than the norm. An unusual approach to the telescopic design is the Zebra PenPod, which telescopes automatically as it's released from it's cap. This ultra-compact design can hang unobtrusively from a keyring yet is perfectly usable for minor jottings. The alternative approach to making a compact pen larger in the hand is the pocket pen - where a long cap contains most of the pen and then becomes a significant part of the barrel when placed on the top of the pen.
