Platinum #3776 Fountain Pen Black
Platinum #3776 PTB-10000B fountain pen. A modern classic newly available in the UK. Designed in 1978 by a project team with the late author Mr. Haruo Umeda whose nickname was "Mr. Fountain Pen". The original #3776 design brief was to create a perfect pen, and the original model had a ribbed barrel to help comfort by dissipating heat. However although the nib won acclaim, the hand-made ribbed barrel was costly to produce, and so Platinum launched this simpler PTB-10000B model in 1988.
There are now many #3776 models in a variety of finishes - PTB-10000B has the typical cigar-shaped body and mid-size of the classic design, with a 14k gold nib in a variety of sizes. The barrel is crafted from quality ABS plastic and the metal trim parts are well-finished and gold-plated. The PTB-10000B is 136.5mm long, 14.5mm diameter and weighs 17.8g.
Uses Platinum ink cartridges, available here. A converter is not supplied as standard but is available separately here.
The #3776 name comes from the height in metres of Mt.Fuji - a symbol of perfection in Japan, but as also a subtle riposte to 'Mont Blanc' perhaps?
Nibs available as medium, fine and broad, plus extra-fine, ultra-fine and soft-fine, a flexible fine nib (SF).
The incredible 3-tine 'Music Nib' pen can be found here.
The nib of the #3776 is a beautiful piece of work - made in-house at Platinum, and all are hand-tested at the factory. This nib and feed is the same as that used in the legendary Nakaya Urushi pens. Uniquely Platinum publish write-out lengths for the nibs, based on a single Platinum cartridge, with a pen load of 50g, at an angle of 60 degrees: Medium 400m Fine 500m Extra-Fine 600m Ultra-fine 700m Soft-fine 450m Broad 300m The additional figures on the chart below indicate the number of standard Japanese characters the nib can write under the same conditions!
Supplied in a Platinum gift box.
Production of the 3776 is now shifting to the 3776 Century model - limited stock remains of this classic pen.
